Pettitte Caps Career With Complete Game

Oct 31, 2014 12:52 AM

Andy Pettitte pitched a complete game at Minute Maid Field in Houston in the final start of his career on Saturday night.

Pettitte allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out five and walking two in his first complete game since 2006.

"It's probably been about 15 years since he's done it," Derek Jeter said. "I told him, 'He is probably going to go see Dr. Andrews after the game.' But I'm happy for him, that he was able to pitch like that in his last game."

Fans chanted the hometown left-hander's name after he finished off the last batter.

"I couldn't have dreamed of this to work out the way it did," Pettitte said. "I'm just so thankful, so blessed and fortunate. I just feel as if God worked this out exactly perfect. Another day that I'll never forget."

Pettitte finished his final season 11-11 with a 3.74 ERA. He never had a season in which he finished below .500. His career record ends up at 256-153.

Pirates Clinch First Playoff Berth Since 1992

Oct 18, 2014 7:10 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, clinching their first playoff berth since 1992 in the process.

They are ensured of one of the two National League Wild Card berths.

"Even though I didn't lose for the last 20 years, they make you feel like you are. You feel like you lost those 20 years," Andrew McCutchen said. "That's all you hear. You hear it every single day -- 'When's it going to change? You think this is the year?' You get sick and tired of hearing that. It's awesome that there won't be any questions anymore. The question is, 'Are we going to be able to go farther?'"

Pittsburgh players sang Journey's "Don't Stop Believing," and chanted, "MVP! MVP!" while surrounding McCutchen.

Dodgers Clinch First NL West Title Since 2009

Sep 16, 2014 5:37 PM

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League West title on Thursday night, their first since 2009.

Three months ago, the Dodgers were in last place.

"I want to keep going," Hanley Ramirez said. "I think that we've got a couple of more steps to do. We've got to keep working and stay together all the way through to the end."

Ramirez has played 1,090 regular-season games but will be making his first trip to the postseason. Only three active players have played more games without making the playoffs.

"I'm a guy that doesn't show a lot of emotion," Don Mattingly said. "I really try to keep it kind of even. But this is a great accomplishment for these guys. We put a great team together and a big payroll with huge expectations. A lot of time that falls apart and it had a chance to fall apart during the season, I thought.

"But the coaching staff stuck together. These guys were loyal to me. There was no backbiting or somebody trying to leap over me. They stuck together. ... The players came together, we got healthy, and then we just rolled."

Demonstrative Jose Fernandez Upsets Braves, Apologizes

Oct 31, 2014 3:40 PM

Rookie Jose Fernandez was in no mood to celebrate when his marvelous season ended with a win Wednesday. Instead, he sought out the Braves so he could apologize for his behavior.

Fernandez pitched seven innings and hit his first major-league homer to help the Marlins to a 5-2 victory. But he drew a rebuke from his manager for showboating, and engaged in a standoff with the Braves that cleared both benches and bullpens.

"I feel embarrassed," Fernandez said. "I feel like I don't deserve to be here, because this isn't high school. This is a professional game. I made a mistake. I'm going to learn from it."
